Get to know more about me

I am Lotte, the creator of Reimagine Midlife. I hope this blog will inspire you to explore new possibilities and embrace curiosity, adventure, and meaningful experiences during midlife.

In the Travel Journal, I share resources and strategies for traveling as a digital nomad. This can be helpful when navigating similar life transitions and challenges. Even if you have no intentions of becoming a digital nomad, the blog provides ideas and inspiration for travel destinations across the US, Mexico, Europe, and Australia.

The Midlife Journal offers an alternative perspective on aging and midlife transition. It challenges societal norms and maybe it will inspire others to rethink their path and priorities.

Hopefully, this blog can serve as a catalyst on your journey of exploration and development during midlife. It is my intention, that we can build a community of like-minded people who provide valuable support, inspiration, and connections to each other.

If you want to know more about me and my background – Keep reading.

I was born and raised in Denmark. For 14 years I lived in Southern California with my husband Allan and two kids, Frederikke and Mathias. When our kids left California to study in Denmark, Allan and I became digital nomads. For the last few years, we have traveled across the US, with trips to Mexico, Europe, and Australia. At the moment we are located in Austin, Texas.

Before we started this journey, I realized that I had to take ownership of a choice I made when our family moved from Denmark to California. I gave up a job I loved and a promising career in the Pharmaceutical Industry. Instead, I accepted the vacant position as a full-time stay-at-home mom in California.

At the time it seemed like a good investment in our family. It would be a few years and then we would go back to Denmark. I never thought that my life would be defined almost entirely by the many roles of motherhood for the following 14 years.

So, my life turned out quite different than I imagined. The temporary break from the corporate world and scaling back my professional ambitions turned out to be permanent.

Prioritizing the children and our family is something I’ll never regret. It has been an absolute privilege to watch my son and daughter develop into amazing, independent young adults. However, it was apparent even before they left for college, that I had to redefine my main purpose in life and find a way for personal growth.

For years I worked as an independent graphic designer. I felt increasingly stuck and uninspired, especially with all the changes midlife seemed to bring. I wanted to create a new path. However, I had no clue what direction to go, but at some point I realized that the most important thing was, to take the first step.

In the wake of the COVID pandemic, and how it affected everyone’s lives in different ways, both Allan and I were location-independent at the time. This made it possible to combine that internal journey I felt I was destined for, with traveling across the US.

As you can read in the Midlife Journal this decision didn’t happen overnight. However, we terminated our lease agreement, put all our things in storage, and roughly planned out the first three months of our journey. Then we headed out across the US with our Golden Retriever Lucca, two laptops, our bikes, and whatever we could fit into a Ford Expedition Max.

In Reimagine Midlife, I share experiences from our incredible midlife journey through personal stories and visual storytelling captured by my iPhone. Hopefully, these stories will inspire others when trying to navigate the changes and challenges of their midlife journey.

Happy reading!

absorb each sensation

We can recycle what initially feels like weakness into strength, ultimately turning grief into empowerment, like fuel feeds fire or wind feeds seas and waves. Remember that every feeling and emotion is valid, and even necessary, as we are complicated beings made of energy, memory, and immense love, and were never meant nor made to feel nothing. – Victoria Erickson
